Happiness is Learning Together in Room 405!
March 10, 2020
Library: We have lost our library slot the last two weeks due to an in house field trip. I have rescheduled our time for tomorrow, so please help your children remember their library books.
Clay Art: We have the opportunity to make a clay art project with Hilary Ford who runs Critters 'N' Clay. We will be making a clay "Wilbur" from Charlotte's Web. We are asking a donation of $12 to cover the cost of the class and the instructor. A flyer went home last Friday with all of the details. Please make checks payable to Bollinger Canyon and turn in you donation by this Friday, March 13th. The children love celebrating literature with art, so thank you in advance!
In an effort to keep any germs from spreading, we are doing our part in room 405. We are washing or sanitizing our hands every time we enter the classroom. I am wiping down chairs, desks, and tables at the end of every day. We are trying to not touch our face (which is really hard), coughing or sneezing into our elbow, and refraining from hugs (which is also really hard!) With that being said, I'm running short on wipes and hand sanitizer. If you have any to spare, any donation would be greatly appreciated.
Conference schedule next week: We will have a minimum day schedule for next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. School will be dismissed at 11:50. Thank you for replying if I reached out to you to hold a conference. I look forward to meeting with you next week. This conference will only be a parent/teacher conference. Reach out to me if you have any questions.
Have a wonderful week!

Library is every Tuesday. Please remember to bring back your books!
Please welcome my student teacher, Jenny Jackson. She will be with our class for 2 and 1/2 days per week for the remainder of the year. She is currently a student at Saint Mary's College and I can already tell she will be a wonderful addition to our classroom.
Field Trip to Forest Home Farms and the Glass House: Our next field trip is scheduled for February 27th. This is an all day field trip. I hope to finalize our drivers by this Friday. If you volunteered to drive on the permission form, I reached out to you. Please confirm that you are still available if you haven't already. Thank you for volunteering! Here is a list of the drivers:
Ms. Madhusudan/ Pruthvi - 3 students and 1 front seat
Ms. Kearney - 3 students
Ms. Kahadawala - 3 students
Ms. Cook -
Mr. Shore - 4 students
Ms. Lau - 6 students
Ms. Roepken - 4 students
Mr. Mue - 4 students including front seat
Mr. Tran - 4 students
Forest Home Farms encourages students to dress in farm clothes: flannel shirts, bandanas, jeans, and closed toed shoes. In addition, please pack a lunch for your student and a snack that the student can keep in their pocket.
Music Performance: Here is the reminder from Ms. Bishop:
We are so excited for our 2nd/3rd grade performance this year, which is right around the corner, 2/20! Here is some important information for you:
- Pizza and other items will be served starting at 5:30 PM (cash please!).
- Attire: Students should come wearing nice clothes - think picture day. Jeans (no shorts please) or a skirt/dress and a nice shirt with no words or writing.
- All students should be in the MPR by 5:45 PM and the performance will begin at 6:00 PM. 2nd grade will go first, followed by a brief intermission, then 3rd grade. Please make sure you are a respectful audience member by using these guidelines:
1) Remain for the entire performance (2nd and 3rd grade) to show your respect for the hard work these students have put in!
2) Make sure your cell phone is or silent or turn it off. If you want to take pictures or video, do so from the back of the room so you don't block other's view with your camera/phone!
3) Be a good example for your children by refraining from talking during the performance and remaining in your seat.
Oral Presentations: Students did a great job on their oral presentations. Many of them chose to speak in front of Mrs. Offerman and she was very impressed! Look for their graded rubric to come home in this week's Friday Folder.
Have a wonderful rest of the week!

Spelling Bee: Spelling Bee lists were sent home before break for the in class spelling bee. This test will take place on Wednesday, January 15th. Twenty words will be chosen from list 1. If more than 1 student gets all 20 words correct, we will have another test that will include list 2. Only 1 student will be chosen from room 405 to represent our class.
The class representative will receive the spelling list for the school wide Bee on Friday, January 17th. Then, the actual school wide spelling bee will take place on Friday, January 31st from 8:30-9:30. Good luck to all!
Field Trip to the One Room School House: Our next field trip is scheduled for January 24th. If you are interested in driving, please make sure that you are registered with the district. I hope to finalize our drivers by the end of next week. If you volunteered to drive on the permission form, I will be reaching out to you. Please confirm that you are still available. If you did not indicate that you can drive on the permission form but wish to drive, please reach out to me as soon as possible.
Dressing Up
Students are encouraged to dress up to represent the time period of the one room school house. School was in session in the one room school house during the late 1800's and early 1900's.
19th-Century Clothing for Boys: Dark pants; overalls; white, plaid or striped shirt; suspenders; bandanas (as neck scarf or handkerchief); dark shoes and socks; flat caps or straw hats. Short pants and dark knee socks.
19th-Century Clothing for Girls: Mid-calf or ankle length skirts or dresses in solid colors or calico prints; aprons; white blouses; knee socks and dark shoes; shawl; bonnet; handkerchief; hair in braids.
Lunch
We are recreating a day in the life of a child going to school during the 19th century. So, in addition to attending the one room school house, we will be eating a typical lunch for that time period in our classroom. Please find examples of food that was consumed from the list below.
19th Century Food Possibilities: Foods that children brought to school needed no refrigeration and were not messy. A typical food might have been a baked sweet potato; cold pancakes from breakfast; or a piece of bread spread with lard and sugar; or a piece of cake.6 History hash slingers, read the following excerpt, explaining food resources, before working on your list of approved or suggested foods for your class. “Most families had a cow. From the cow came butter, milk and cheese. Many farms had pigs to slaughter for meat. Every farm had chickens and there were usually plenty of eggs. Women baked breads. They could make a sandwich on a slice of loaf bread, a biscuit, a cold roll, or on a cold pancake. There were lots of fruits and vegetables from the garden. Some, such as peaches and green beans, were canned. The orchards generally had apple, cherry, peach, pear and plum trees. Apples and plums could be dried and eaten as a sweet food. Carrots and cabbage stayed fresh in a cold room. Garden vegetables were both canned and pickled.”
Report Cards: Report Cards will be distributed on Friday, January 17th. Please look for them in your child's backpack and reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Oral Presentation: Your child will be expected to present an oral presentation by the end of January. They have a choice between presenting their opinion piece of writing or their heritage report. Look for more information to follow.
Lunch Bunch Book Club: (Optional) My class will be having a book club during lunch revolving around the book I gave as a holiday gift to the students, Runaway Ralph. Our first meeting is scheduled for next Thursday, January 16th. We will meet in my classroom, have lunch, and talk about the book. The students will then be dismissed out to recess. Here is the schedule:
Thursday, January 16th - pages 1-60
Thursday, January 23 - Pages 60-120
Thursday, January 30 - 120-end
As with any book club, if the students attend, they are expected to have read the pages and participate in our discussion. Encourage your child to join us! The students are excited :)
Have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend.

Field Trip Drivers needed! We are in need of field trip drivers. So far, I have tentatively heard from 2 parents. If you are available to drive, please reach out to me via e-mail. We need 5-6 drivers to make this trip happen.
Heritage Project: On Friday, your children received their heritage project. This is a wonderful time to connect with family and learn about your families heritage and the country from where you came. Please take time to review the packet where you will find 2 projects and an invitation to our heritage luncheon. The heritage doll is an optional project but the heritage interview is not optional. Thanksgiving week is a great time to conduct the interview as we are often surrounded by family during this time. Please mark your calendars for December 18th from 11:40-12:40. This is when we will come together and celebrate our diversity. It is my favorite event of the year :)
Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful week off to celebrate with family and friends.

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all of the veterans and current military women and men who currently protect our country and freedom. I hope everyone is enjoying the extra day to spend with family and friends.
A big thank you to all of the parents who came out to support our Halloween party. It was a tremendous success. You created a wonderful memory for your children.
Field Trips: Field trip permission forms went home on Friday. Please fill out all of the permission slips and turn them in together. In order to make the field trips possible we are asking for a $30 donation to cover the cost. Please make checks payable to the Bollinger Canyon Ed Fund. In addition, we are in need of 5-6 drivers for our first field trip scheduled to the San Ramon City Hall on December 11th. It is a half day field trip. We will be leaving the school around 9:15 and returning around 11:30. If you would like to drive, please e-mail me. Also, please make sure that you are cleared to drive through the district.
Curriculum update:
Reading: We are currently reading Because of Winn Dixie and learning to identify character traits and evidence to support our thinking. We are also learning that all stories contain story elements: characters, settings, problems, and solutions. We are learning that characters change and evolve throughout the story and these changes help us understand the plot. Students are working hard to identify character traits and story elements in their independent books.
Writing: We are currently writing opinion pieces. My students identified an issue with the school where they wanted to see change. They formed their opinions and supported their opinions with reasons and evidence. They learned how to develop strong leads and conclusions, utilize transitions words to make their writing flow properly, and how to elaborate to enhance their writing. We are in the process of revising and editing. In celebration, students will be given the opportunity to read their opinions to Mrs. Offerman. If the students' opinions are bold and supported with strong reasons and examples, who knows? Maybe we will see some change at Bollinger. Longer Recess anyone?
Math: We just completed Module 2 in math. Please look for the end of the module assessment to come home shortly. We will begin Module 3 tomorrow and this unit will take us back to multiplication and division with larger numbers. Please encourage your students to practice their math facts for a short period every day. Having these facts memorized will help students tremendously when they move on to higher level math.
Two weeks until Thanksgiving break. We can do this!
Have a great week!

Library is every Tuesday. Please remember to bring back your books.
Thank you for a wonderful conference week. I enjoyed celebrating your children and the growth they have made so far in third grade. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to meet with me. I would also like to thank you for all of the books donated to our classroom library from the book fair. There is nothing like a new book to get the students excited to read!
Many of you inquired about having access to a list of leveled books to help your child choose "just right" reading material. I will begin developing this list and create a tab in the website for easy access. Look for this to happen soon.
Math Groups: Math groups will begin Monday, October 14th. Tomorrow you will receive a letter indicating your child's math teacher. The students will be introduced to their math teacher tomorrow and instruction will begin on Tuesday. Math groups will be held Monday through Thursday. On Friday we will reinforce skills learned through Dreambox, math games, and small group instruction. Please reach out to me at any time to discuss the math group your child has been placed into.
Reading: We launched our mystery unit with an in class mystery that the students were so excited to solve! We are currently learning that mystery books contain elements that are unique to this genre. Understanding and using the mystery elements helps readers better comprehend mystery novels. In addition, we are reading our mysteries in book clubs. This requires students to come prepared everyday with the assigned reading and work collaboratively with their group members by engaging in meaningful conversations. Please check in with your kiddo and ask them how this work is going.
Special Guest: Penny Warner, a local children's author of Code Busters, will be joining the third grade on Monday afternoon, October 14th. Ms. Warner will talk to the students about what it's like to write a mystery novel and get the students even more excited to read mysteries! I have attached an order form for the Code Buster books. If you would like to order a signed copy of Penny Warner's books, please print out the order form and bring it along tomorrow!
Writing: We have completed our personal narrative writing unit. We will continue to revisit this writing throughout the year. We are currently beginning our opinion writing unit. Students will learn the format of opinion writing by stating their opinion and supporting their opinion with reasons and examples to support their opinion.
Pumpkin project: This Wednesday, October 16th, we will be creating yarn pumpkins. This is a fun project but can be messy. Please contact our room parent if you care to join us in the fun. Also, please encourage your children to dress in clothing that can handle a little mess.
Enjoy the rest of this lovely weekend,
Kelly

Library is every Tuesday. Please remember to bring back your books.
Conferences: Conferences are right around the corner, scheduled for the week of October 7th. In addition, I have included time slots on Friday, October 4th, for parents who are able to meet at that time. I will be sending home a conference sign up genius immediately after school today. During this conference, I would like to provide the option of meeting together with your child or having a parent/teacher conference. Please indicate on the sign up genius whether or not your child will be joining us.
LIBRARY NEWS: As third graders, the librarian is allowing students to check out multiple books. Please be aware of this new rule and help your students find a safe place to keep their books for the week. It is truly a lesson in responsibility and I appreciate your support.
Word Work: Our word work groups have been established and we had a successful first week. Please refer to my word work tab for more information regarding word work and how your child can further be supported at home with their word study.
Math: We are in the process of determining our math groups. Math groups will begin the week of September 30th. You will receive a letter informing you of which teacher your child will be working with in math. In addition, please look for the mid-module test and most recent quizzes to come home in your child's blue everyday folder. Furthermore, we are working on memorizing our facts for 2's and 5's. Please encourage your child to practice their facts everyday. Committing their multiplication and division facts to memory will help them moving forward to higher level math.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Kelly

Library is every Tuesday. Please remember to bring back your book.
GATE Meeting: Parents of GATE students, please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 18th. A meeting will be held in the MPR at 6:00 to discuss the GATE program. Parent volunteers are a vital part of a successful GATE program. We are currently looking for parent representatives. If you are interested, please send me an e-mail.
Math: We are currently learning multiplication and division strategies. Creating equal groups, utilizing repeated addition, and building arrays are quality methods to understand multiplication and division. We will be beginning timed tests for multiplication this Friday. Our first set of facts to master are the 2's. If your child can skip count by 2's, (which they all can) this should be a relatively easy task. Be sure to help your kiddos practice these facts for a couple of minutes everyday. This practice is very important to their success in memorizing the facts.
We will be having a mid-module math test next Monday. Look for practice test homework to come home this evening. This homework is very similar to the actual test.
Writing: We are currently working on writing personal narratives. We are learning how to brainstorm ideas and discover a strong small moment. We are studying mentor texts and learning how to show the moment rather than tell the moment. The children are really enjoying this!
Reading: We are currently learning how to better understand what we are reading by utilizing comprehension strategies. We have discussed asking questions, making predictions, and visualizing to help us dive deeper into our reading. In addition, we are learning that all stories have elements (characters, setting, problem, and solution) which help us predict what will happen next in the story. The reading homework has revolved around the lessons taught during class.
Thank you for taking the time to read about what is currently happening in our classroom. Enjoy the upcoming weekend.
